Brand Identity Development

Purpose

Over six weeks, I challenged myself to create three brand identities for three fictitious companies occupying three different industries. The challenge was in going through every stage of the identity development process from consultation to delivery in a condensed time frame.

Background

A brand is the public perception of an organization and its products and services. A logo is the visual representation of a brand. I like to think of logos as the face of a brand. David Ogilvy, who coined the term brand, referred to logos or brandmark as “the personality of a brand.”

Natty Man

Natty Man is a luxury men’s fashion label. It’s looking to promote an ideal. The label was created for men who need to be stylish but have a wry sense of humor. Natty Man wants its brand to represent style with a hint of attitude. The company focuses on a timeless, classic style. Its target audience is affluent professionals, executives, and managers aged 35 to 55. Download Logo Guide

Mash-Up Ideation Worksheet

Purpose

This worksheet demonstrates the ideation technique mash-up. I designed it to be clear and easy-to-read and work well at different sizes (e.g., 8.5 x 11 in or 11 x 17).

Background

A mash-up exercise finds creative solutions for a “How Might We” question. For example, how might we increase attendance for high school basketball games? For the mash-up, one picks two broad, unrelated categories in which to brainstorm. Each category is separately brainstormed in turn. It’s best to use a time limit, say five or ten minutes. When the brainstorm is complete, mash-up the results. Put together to items that appear unrelated.

Visualizing Data

Purpose

I used size and distance to tell the story. The size of the weight plates indicates success. I used distance to show our success rate—the higher the percentage, the farther from the plates. The largest weight plate represents people who met both aerobic and muscle building guidelines. The medium-sized plate represents people who met one of the guidelines, and the small plate is for people who met neither guideline.

Background

Data visualization is the term for the graphical representation of data or information. The strength of visualization is the capability of making a large amount of information digestible at once.
